Renowned singer/musician Tina Schouw’s album is a beautiful, South African collection of melodies specifically for children. The singer/songwriter who wrote sophisticated songs and played in jazz clubs until the early hours of the morning one day found herself transformed into a mother.
These gentle songs embrace experiences common to mothers and children around the world. The English and Xhosa songs are based on stories and phenomena familiar to us. The songs have universal appeal, reflecting our common humanity. The /Xam folklore, Halley’s Comet, the magic of the Milky Way, The Beautiful Moon and her entourage of dazzling stars all play a major part in the essence of this album. The songs are inspired by real memories and events, as well as stories Tina wishes she had heard when she was small.
“They are songs for soothing, melodies for unwinding, delicious tunes to delight in and lullabies to bring the night in, “says Schouw, “It is an album lovingly put together for the child in all of us to wonder and marvel at. Music is about crossing boundaries, recognising the human in all of us, our common threads. We are an African family and I wanted the album to reflect that.”
Best of all, because Tina’s music is not patronising to kids, the instrumentation makes the music appealing to everybody. “My hope is that everyone who listens to it will come out of the experience uplifted, touched and moved,” says Tina. It’s certain that her wish will be granted. The Goodnight Songs is a CD that has been made with love and integrity which shines through each and every song
